Knifepoint Attacks in Derry Spark Community Fears

Derry is grappling with a wave of anxiety following two separate knifepoint attacks on women in the past few days. The incidents, both described as sexually motivated, have raised serious concerns about the safety of women in the city.

Saturday’s Attack:

On Saturday afternoon, a woman in her 40s was walking her dog in Top of the Hill Park when a man brandishing a kitchen knife approached her. The woman bravely fought back, swinging her dog lead at the assailant, who fled the scene. Police responded immediately but were unable to apprehend the suspect, who is believed to have headed towards Corrody Road.

Friday Night Attack:

Just a day earlier, a woman in her 20s was walking alone in Drumahoe Park when a man attacked her from behind. The assailant punched her, dragged her into nearby trees, and pushed her to the ground at knifepoint.
Despite the threat, the victim managed to fight back, striking the attacker with her torch before escaping.

Police Response and Investigation:**

Detective Inspector Ross Olphert of the PSNI confirmed that officers are investigating the possibility of a link between the two attacks.

“We understand that there will be concern in the community at a second knifepoint attack on a woman in just two days,” Detective Inspector Olphert said. “We are taking these incidents extremely seriously and have implemented a focused, tactical patrolling plan, including increased police visibility in key areas such as parks.”

Police have released a description of the suspect: a white man in his 20s, approximately 5’ 11” tall with a slim build, wearing all black clothing and a hooded sweatshirt pulled tight around his face.

**Community Calls for Action:

SDLP MLA for Foyle Sinead McLaughlin expressed deep concern over the attacks. “There is huge concern in our city following a number of recent attacks on women,” she said.

“Mothers are having to caution their daughters to take care when out and about, and this should not be happening. This has been an accepted fact and tolerated within our society for far too long. We have a serious issue here, and we have to get to grips with it.”

McLaughlin stated she would be raising the issue in the Stormont Assembly on Monday.

Report Any Suspicious Activity:

The PSNI urges anyone with information about these incidents or who notices any suspicious activity to contact them immediately. Your information could be vital in bringing these attackers to justice and ensuring the safety of our community.
