Apple’s iPad Pro M5 and Beyond: Vapor Chamber Cooling and a Shift in Release Strategy
Apple’s iPad Pro continues to refine its position as a powerful, ultra-portable computing device. While the current iPad Pro M5 offers a compelling user experience, Apple is already looking ahead, with plans to integrate advanced cooling technology and adjust its release cadence for the Pro line.
Vapor Chamber Cooling on the Horizon
Future iPad Pro models, potentially launching as early as spring 2027, are expected to incorporate a vapor chamber cooling system, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman . This technology, already implemented in the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, utilizes a sealed circuit with a liquid that evaporates and condenses to efficiently dissipate heat generated by the processor.
The implementation of a vapor chamber system aims to allow the iPad Pro to sustain peak performance for longer durations, crucial for demanding tasks like video editing and graphically intensive gaming. This addresses a potential area for improvement, even if not currently urgent.
M6 Chip and 2nm Process Technology
The future iPad Pro incorporating the vapor chamber is also anticipated to feature the M6 chip, which will be one of the first System on a Chips (SoCs) built on a 2-nanometer process . This advancement promises increased performance and improved efficiency.
A Shift in iPad Pro Release Strategy
Apple appears to be slowing down the release cycle for the iPad Pro. Gurman reports that the next major update won’t arrive until spring 2027 at the earliest , representing a year and a half gap since the launch of the M5-powered iPad Pro in November 2025. This confirms a new strategy of fewer, less frequent updates with incremental improvements, focusing on processor upgrades and features like the vapor chamber system.
This strategy is a result of the iPad Pro’s maturity, having undergone a significant redesign with the M4 chip, achieving a remarkably thin form factor.
iPad Market Share and Continued Innovation
The iPad range currently represents 6% of Apple’s revenue, a valuable contribution but smaller than the iPhone’s 60% . Apple continues to innovate across its iPad lineup, with new models expected this week, including an entry-level iPad with an A18 chip, and the iPad Air M4 later this month. A new iPad mini may also be released before the end of the year.
M5 Chip Launch in Late 2025
The M5 chip is on track to launch in the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro in the fall of 2025 , . Mass production of the devices is expected to begin in the second half of the year .
