Succession Concerns in Iran Following Khamenei’s Death

Iran is reportedly delaying naming a successor to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader killed over the weekend in U.S. And Israeli attacks, citing security concerns. Israel has asserted it will target whoever is instated, while President Donald Trump has doubled down on wanting to influence the selection process.

Delay Due to Security Threats

According to a report by The New York Times, citing two unnamed Iranian officials, the delay in naming a successor stems from fears that any potential candidate will be targeted. Despite Mojtaba Khamenei, the second-eldest son of the late Supreme Leader, emerging as a strong contender, no official announcement has been made.

Israeli Warnings

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz posted on social media on Wednesday, warning that any leader appointed by Iran to succeed Ali Khamenei would be “an unequivocal target for elimination,” regardless of their identity or location.

Trump’s Opposition and Influence Attempts

President Trump has publicly rejected Mojtaba Khamenei as a viable successor, calling him “a lightweight.” He stated that it would be “unacceptable” for Iranian leadership to select his son. Trump expressed a desire for a leader who would “bring harmony and peace to Iran.”

Echoes of Venezuela

Trump referenced the situation in Venezuela, stating he would like to be “involved in the appointment, like with Delcy in Venezuela,” referring to Delcy Rodriguez, who became Venezuela’s acting President with what Trump described as his blessing after the U.S. Captured former leader Nicolás Maduro in an extraordinary military operation earlier this year.

Desire for Regime Overhaul

Trump indicated a desire to remove the existing leadership structure in Iran entirely. “We want to go in and clean out everything,” he told NBC News on Thursday. “We don’t want someone who would rebuild over a 10-year period. We want them to have a good leader. We have some people who I think would do a good job.”

Seeking a “Rational and Sane” Leader

Speaking to TIME for its cover story, Trump said his objective is to install a leader in Iran “that is rational and sane.”
