Israel Kills Top Iranian Officials in Strikes

Israel has claimed responsibility for the deaths of two high-ranking Iranian officials in recent strikes, significantly escalating tensions in the region. Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, and Gholamreza Soleimani, commander of the Revolutionary Guard’s Basij militia, were reportedly killed in overnight strikes, according to Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz.

Key Figures Eliminated

Ali Larijani, a prominent figure in Iranian politics, previously served as Speaker of the National Assembly and led Iran’s nuclear negotiations with the West. He had been Iran’s top security chief since August and was considered a key leader in the ongoing conflict, particularly after the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in February. Larijani’s background differed from other Iranian leaders, holding academic degrees in mathematics, computing, and a doctorate in philosophy.

Gholamreza Soleimani headed the Basij militia, a force central to the suppression of protests within Iran. The Israeli military stated the Basij, under Soleimani’s command, was responsible for widespread violence, arrests, and the employ of force against demonstrators. Source

Escalation of Conflict

These killings follow the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in an airstrike on February 28th, marking a period of intensified conflict initiated by the United States and Israel. Other top leaders within the Iranian theocracy have also been killed since then. Source

Iran has responded with missile and drone attacks targeting its Gulf Arab neighbors and Israel. Incoming Iranian missiles prompted a brief closure of Dubai’s airspace, and debris from an intercepted missile killed a man in Abu Dhabi. Israel reported incoming salvos from Iran targeting Tel Aviv and also reported strikes from Hezbollah in Lebanon. Source

Israel’s Strategy and International Law

Experts suggest that Israel’s strategy involves the liquidation of political and military leaders deemed threats. This approach has expanded since the Hamas attack on Israel in 2023, shifting towards a doctrine of “total destruction” of perceived threats. Source

The killing of Khamenei was not surprising, despite being a violation of international law. Israel does not seek negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear program, missile program, or support for proxy groups, and initiated recent conflicts during ongoing negotiations with the US. Source

Iran’s Response and Future Implications

Iranian state media has yet to confirm the deaths of Larijani and Soleimani, though a message from Larijani’s office is expected. While liquidations create challenges for Iran, the country has established institutions to manage the replacement of top leaders. Source

Experts warn that this liquidation strategy could set a dangerous precedent, potentially motivating other countries to target leaders in hostile regimes. Source
