KPK Investigates High-Price Auction of Used Cell Phones, Suspects Data Security Motive

Jakarta – The Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is investigating an anomaly in a recent auction where two used OPPO cell phones, initially valued at IDR 73,000 (approximately $4.50 USD), were sold for approximately IDR 59.72 million (approximately $3,700 USD). The Coordinator of the Indonesian Anti-Corruption Society (MAKI), Boyamin Saiman, has urged the KPK to determine the identity of the buyer, suggesting the high price indicates a desire to secure data contained on the devices.

Auction Anomaly and Concerns Over Data

The unusual auction result came to light on Monday, March 16, 2026, with KPK Director of Asset Tracking, Evidence Management and Execution, Mungki Hadipolitikto, acknowledging the discrepancy. According to Hadipolitikto, the winning bidder had only deposited a security deposit as of March 16th and had not yet completed payment, with a deadline of March 25, 2026.

Boyamin Saiman believes the high price paid for the phones suggests the buyer was motivated by the data they contained, rather than the devices themselves. He contrasted the situation with auctions of items like batik cloth, where higher bids might be driven by sentimental value. “The price of cellphones is getting cheaper and cheaper. Not even if they are used as souvenirs. So you need to be suspicious of the buyer of the cellphone when the data is something they want to save,” Boyamin stated on Tuesday, March 17, 2026. He speculated the phones might even be gold-plated to justify the price, but ultimately believes the data is the key factor.

Potential Corruption Links and KPK Investigation

Boyamin has advised the KPK to thoroughly examine the data on the phones, suspecting it may contain evidence related to ongoing or potential corruption cases. He believes the buyer likely sought to prevent the data from being leaked. “I’m sure the buyer wanted to save the data so it wouldn’t leak anywhere. If someone else bought it it would definitely leak, that’s why he dared to buy it at a high price,” Boyamin explained.

The KPK is currently awaiting full payment from the auction winner. If the payment is not received by the deadline, the deposit will be forfeited, and the phones will be re-auctioned. The agency is also investigating the circumstances surrounding the high bid and the potential motives of the buyer.

MAKI’s Previous Actions and Legal Challenges

Boyamin Saiman, as Coordinator of MAKI, has been actively involved in reporting alleged corruption to the KPK. In January 2026, he reported allegations of corruption related to the issuance of land certificates, citing Article 9 of the Corruption Eradication Law. MAKI filed a lawsuit against the KPK in November 2025, challenging the agency’s handling of a corruption case involving North Sumatra Governor Bobby Nasution and a road construction project. The case was heard at the South Jakarta District Court in December 2025.

MAKI, represented by Boyamin Saiman, has also been involved in judicial reviews of the Corruption Eradication Commission Law.
