Ireland Extends Temporary Protection for Ukrainian Refugees to 2027
Irish authorities have automatically extended temporary protection status for Ukrainian nationals and other beneficiaries of the EU Temporary Protection Directive until March 4, 2027, providing legal certainty for tens of thousands of people who fled the war in Ukraine. The extension, announced on February 16, 2026, applies to permits previously valid until March 4, 2026, and requires no renewal or resubmission of applications.
What is Temporary Protection?
The EU Temporary Protection Directive (2001/55 EC) was activated in March 2022 in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It provides immediate protection in EU countries for people displaced by the conflict. Ireland implemented the directive through Section 60 of the International Protection Act 2015.
Who is Eligible?
Temporary Protection in Ireland applies to:
- Ukrainian nationals who were residing in Ukraine before February 24, 2022.
- Nationals of third countries or stateless persons who would have benefited from international protection in Ukraine and were residing there before February 24, 2022.
- Family members of those covered above, where the family unit existed in Ukraine prior to February 24, 2022.
- Nationals of third countries and stateless people with a permanent Ukrainian residence permit who cannot safely return to their country of origin.
Rights Granted with Temporary Protection
Temporary Protection status in Ireland grants beneficiaries:
- Legal residence
- The right to work without a separate permit
- Access to healthcare
- Access to education
- Access to social services
- The ability to travel within European countries for up to 90 days in states recognizing the regime.
EU-Wide Extension
Ireland’s extension aligns with a decision by the Council of the European Union to extend the Temporary Protection Directive until March 4, 2027, for all EU member states. Discussions are ongoing at the European level regarding the legal status of Ukrainians after this period.
