Ireland Reads Campaign Gains Momentum with Library-Led Initiatives
Throughout February, readers across Ireland have been encouraged to participate in the annual Ireland Reads campaign, culminating in a nationwide day of events and readings on February 28th, 2026. A notable example of the campaign’s success is the D24 Reads book club at Tallaght Library in Dublin, which has seen significant growth in membership over the past two years.
D24 Reads: A Growing Community of Book Lovers
Established in 2024, D24 Reads challenges its members to read 24 books within a 12-month period. The club has experienced a surge in popularity, growing from 250 members in its first year to over 400 in 2025, according to Michelle Leamy, Senior Librarian at Tallaght Library. The launch event for the 2026 challenge is scheduled for Saturday, February 28th, coinciding with Ireland Reads Day. Details of the launch include guest speakers, Dublin’s Mayor Pamela Kearns and bestselling crime writer Louise Phillips.
The Benefits of Reading: Mindfulness and Connection
Organizers of Ireland Reads emphasize the positive impact of reading on mental wellbeing. D24 Reads member Seamus Whelan highlighted the mindful quality of reading, noting that it provides a similar benefit to mindfulness courses, allowing readers to develop into fully immersed in a story and experience a sense of calm. For many participants, the social aspect of the book club is equally valuable, fostering conversations and shared enjoyment of literature.
A Safe Space and a Lifeline for Newcomers
The Tallaght Library and the D24 Reads initiative provide a welcoming environment for all. Mithun Pillai, a recent immigrant from India, described the library as a “safe place” and credited the campaign with encouraging him to read extensively, having completed 50-55 books in the last two years.
A Community Hub
Local residents Bob and Maureen McNamara are enthusiastic supporters of the library, with Maureen jokingly referred to as being “addicted” to the space. The library offers a range of facilities, including outreach programs, study rooms, and recreational games like chess and pool, making it a vibrant community hub. South Dublin Libraries are hosting events at Tallaght, North Clondalkin, Clondalkin, and Lucan libraries.
Encouraging a Love of Reading
Sheila McAdam, a long-time member, encourages potential participants not to feel pressured to finish books they don’t enjoy, emphasizing that the experience should be positive and fun. Participants receive a sticker on a loyalty bookmark for each book completed, with prizes awarded at milestones of 6, 12, 18, and 24 books.
Ireland Reads is supported by Healthy Ireland, public libraries, and organizations promoting reading, literacy, and the arts, including the National Adult Literacy Agency.
