Ireland’s Renewable Energy Surged to 42% of Electricity in September 2025

Ireland made significant strides in renewable energy adoption in September 2025, with 42% of the country’s electricity generated from renewable sources, according to provisional data from EirGrid, the national grid operator. This marks a substantial increase in the share of clean energy powering the nation.

Wind Energy Leads the Charge

Wind farms were the dominant source of renewable electricity, contributing 34% of the total electricity used in Ireland during September. Total wind energy generation reached 920 Gigawatt hours (GWh), a notable increase compared to the 776 GWh generated in September 2024 . This demonstrates the continued importance of wind power in Ireland’s energy mix.

Solar Power Gains Momentum

Grid-scale solar energy also played a role, generating 97 GWh of electricity, accounting for approximately 4% of the total electricity generated in September . This represents a growing contribution from solar power to Ireland’s renewable energy portfolio.

Overall Electricity Demand and Fuel Mix

Overall electricity system demand in September stood at 2715 GWh, slightly up from August . The remaining electricity supply was comprised of 37% from gas and 20% from imports .

Grid Capacity and Future Outlook

EirGrid’s electricity grid can currently accommodate up to 75% of electricity from renewable sources at any given time, known as the system non-synchronous penetration (SNSP) limit . Diarmaid Gillespie, Director of System Operations at EirGrid, noted that as Ireland heads into the winter months, wind generation is expected to turn into even more dominant, alongside an increase in overall electricity demand, particularly after the end of daylight saving time .

Investment in Energy Infrastructure

The Irish government recently announced an additional €3.5 billion in equity investment for EirGrid and the ESB, aimed at strengthening and upgrading the country’s energy infrastructure . This investment signals a commitment to further expanding renewable energy capacity and ensuring a reliable electricity supply.
