EL: Navigating Truth in a Post-Truth World

A latest novel, EL by Thaddeus Ó Buachalla, delves into the complexities of truth in an age of misinformation and conspiracy theories, blending scholarly detective work with speculative fiction. The work, published by Mercier Press, has garnered recognition with an An Post Irish Book Award and an Oireachtas Award.

Exploring the Concept of Truth

EL examines the challenges of discerning truth in a world saturated with information. The novel posits that the internet, while providing unprecedented access to knowledge, has as well fostered an environment where misinformation and conspiracy theories thrive. The narrative explores how an abundance of information can lead to fragmented interpretations and a questioning of reality.

A Dual Narrative Structure

The novel unfolds through two interwoven storylines. One thread is set in contemporary Cork city, following protagonists as they investigate the discovery of microscopic humanoid beings – the firíní – living amongst us. The other thread transports readers to 17th-century Holland, France, Italy and England, where prominent scientists grapple with the same perplexing phenomenon. This structure creates a complex web of information, challenging readers to question the nature of truth.

Cork City as a Character

The contemporary storyline is deeply rooted in the author’s personal connection to Cork city, specifically the Ballyphehane area. Ó Buachalla aims to vividly portray the city’s vibrant culture and the places that shaped his upbringing, including its bars, chippers, and shops.

The Author: Thaddeus Ó Buachalla

Thaddeus Ó Buachalla is a multifaceted artist. Beyond his work as a novelist, he is an Irish-language singer performing sean-nós and spoken-word pieces, notably with his show Immram an Phréacháin. He is also a member of the West Cork group Pied Wagtail Collective, playing instruments such as the oud, guitar, bouzouki, tuba, and trumpet. Ó Buachalla holds a PhD in Modern Irish from University College Cork and is the author of Clocháin sa Scoilt, a critical study of the postmodern novel in Irish literature. He is currently working on his second novel, Arrazalius nó Cathú Antaine.

Synopsis: A Four-Century Conspiracy

EL’s synopsis reveals a story beginning with a Cork academic’s discovery of microscopic humanoids, which unravels a four-century conspiracy linked to Galileo’s discoveries and extending to the complexities of Brexit. The novel asks a central question: in an era of deepfakes and social media deception, who controls reality? It’s described as a blend of academic mystery, historical thriller, and philosophical inquiry.

EL by Thaddeus Ó Buachalla is available from Mercier Press, priced at €19.99.
