Israel Closes Ibrahimi Mosque for Sukkot, Palestinian Authority Condemns as ‘Temporal and Spatial Division’

Jerusalem, Palestine – In a move widely condemned by the Palestinian Authority, Israel closed the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron, a disputed holy site in the West Bank, to Muslim worshippers for the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. This closure, scheduled to last until Tuesday, has sparked accusations of ongoing Israeli attempts to assert control over the religious site and limit the rights of Palestinian Muslims.

Settlers’ Access vs. Muslim Worshipers’ Rights

Ghassan al-Rajabi, the Director General of Palestinian Waqf in Hebron, denounced the closure as part of Israel’s policy of “temporal and spatial division” of the mosque complex. He emphasized that illegal Israeli settlers permanently occupy over two-thirds of the site, conducting their religious rituals there. This, according to Rajabi, is part of a broader effort to establish a new reality where settlers have permanent access while Muslim religious rights are curtailed.

The Ibrahimi Mosque, revered by both Muslims and Jews, is believed to be the burial place of the prophets Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Situated in the heart of Hebron’s Old City, it has been a source of ongoing tension and conflict.

History of Conflict and Division

Following a horrific massacre committed by Jewish extremist Baruch Goldstein in 1994, which claimed the lives of 29 Palestinian worshippers at the mosque, the Israeli government divided the complex between Muslim and Jewish worshippers. This division, critics argue, further entrenches the conflict and restricts the full exercise of religious freedom for Muslims.

The mosque’s limited access during Sukkot reinforces concerns about the ongoing Israeli control over the site and the limitations faced by Palestinian Muslims in practicing their faith freely. This situation continues to fuel tensions in the region and highlight the need for a comprehensive and just solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
