Israel’s ban on vital UNRWA services will be a catastrophe for Gaza

A humanitarian crisis looms over Gaza and Palestinian refugee camps across the region as Israel’s parliament voted to ban the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) from operating on its soil. This drastic measure, passed despite international pressure, declares UNRWA a terror group and effectively cuts off cooperation with the UN agency.

A Lifeline Cut: UNRWA’s Vital Role Threatened

UNRWA provides critical services to millions of Palestinians, including education, healthcare, food distribution, and psychological support. Its mandate extends to refugees displaced in 1948 and subsequent conflicts, reaching over 5.6 million individuals across Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria.

Experts warn that the ban, operationalizing a ban on entry permits for foreign UNRWA staff and halting coordination with the Israeli military for aid shipments, will leave hundreds of thousands vulnerable, pushing them towards starvation and exacerbating the ongoing crisis in Gaza.

A Devastating Impact on Palestinian Lives

“You see how things are here,” said Samer al-Qam, 47, gesturing around Shuafat’s chaotic main street in Jerusalem. “Unrwa runs the camp’s schools, and the health clinic. It’s a major employer. Are the Israelis going to come and do it? This is not just about Unrwa … I think it’s about getting rid of Palestinians completely.”

Aida Saleh, 67, echoed these concerns. “I am diabetic and I need the Unrwa clinic for my insulin. Yes, it would be better if we didn’t have to rely on it, but if Israel will not give us rights there is no other choice.”

International Condemnation and Uncertain Future

The ban has drawn widespread international condemnation. While Israel claims it is acting to protect its security, critics argue that the move will worsen the already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza and undermine peace efforts in the region.

The Biden administration has urged Israel to reconsider, warning that the ban could lead to a halt in US weapons transfers. The future of UNRWA and the millions it serves hangs in the balance, highlighting the urgent need for a diplomatic solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Take Action Now: Support UNRWA’s Vital Work

The situation facing Palestinians relying on UNRWA is critical. Consider donating to UNRWA or advocating for continued international support. Your voice can make a difference in ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches those who need it most.
