Fincantieri Lays Keel for First U212NFS Submarine, Boosting Italian Naval Capabilities
The keel-laying ceremony for the first U212NFS (Near Future Submarine), a next-generation vessel for the Italian Navy, took place on February 27, 2026, at Fincantieri’s Muggiano shipyard in La Spezia, Italy. Fincantieri is constructing four of these submarines under a program managed by OCCAR (Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en matière d’Armement). Delivery of the first U212NFS is scheduled for 2029. Defence Industry Europe reported the event.
Next-Generation Submarine Features
The U212NFS class represents a significant advancement over the previous U212A class. Key improvements include greater design maturity, increased national technological content and enhanced integration of onboard systems. Fincantieri highlights that Italian industry has developed innovations such as a lithium-ion propulsion battery and a new combat system.
Strategic Importance and Industrial Impact
These advancements are expected to deliver greater stealth, endurance, efficiency, and cyber resilience. Fincantieri emphasized the program’s contribution to preserving and enhancing national industrial know-how, solidifying the company’s technological position and that of the broader Italian supply chain. The Muggiano shipyard, with over a century of experience and more than one hundred submarines built, plays a central role in this effort.
OCCAR’s Role in Program Management
The U212NFS program is managed and overseen by OCCAR, an international organization specializing in cooperative defense programs. OCCAR has a proven track record in managing complex defense projects on behalf of participating states.
Additional Submarine Construction
On June 28, 2024, OCCAR exercised an option for Fincantieri to construct a fourth U212NFS submarine for the Italian Navy, with a total project value of €500 million, including integrated logistic and in-service support. Army Recognition reported this development.
