J. Cole Reflects on Drake and Kendrick Lamar Feud, Expresses Continued Admiration
J. Cole has publicly addressed the year-long feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar, a conflict that escalated from lyrical sparring to legal action. While Cole himself briefly entered the fray with a diss track, he later apologized to Lamar and maintains genuine respect for both artists.
The Origins of the Conflict and Cole’s Involvement
The animosity between Drake and Kendrick Lamar dates back to 2013, initially sparked by a verse from Lamar on Substantial Sean’s “Control.” However, the conflict reignited in 2024 with Lamar’s lyrics in “Like That,” prompting a series of diss tracks from both artists. Cole initially contributed to the tension with “7 Minute Drill,” but quickly expressed remorse for his involvement.
Dreamville Fest Apology and Continued Respect
Cole publicly apologized to Lamar during his performance at the 2024 Dreamville Fest. In a recent interview with Apple Music’s Nadeska Alexis, Cole elaborated on the moment leading up to the apology. He described feeling stressed before taking the stage, but then experiencing a sense of clarity and excitement when the idea for the apology came to him. He felt he had misrepresented himself and wanted to rectify that.
“It hit me an hour before [hitting the stage],” Cole explained. “Before that, I was stressing the f*ck out. Then the moment for the idea came to me like a guide and I lifted, and I got light, and I got excited.”
A Shared History and Criticism of Public Engagement
Despite competing for chart positions in the 2010s, Cole recalls a sense of camaraderie between himself, Drake, and Lamar. He expressed his frustration with how the public engaged with the feud, believing it may have exacerbated the tensions between the two artists.
“I got genuine admiration for these dudes,” Cole stated. “I hate how the world sh*t on either one of them in defense of the other…even saying it out loud is a little silly.”
Reflecting on Misrepresentation
Cole further explained that he felt “miserable” about his initial contribution to the conflict, particularly as his diss track coincided with the peak of the drama. He worried about appearing to represent a negative narrative. “Might Delete Later had just dropped…the drama of all of this is the biggest news happening, and I’m coming out as a representative of what the f*ck they just heard.”
