J.Y. Park Responds to Controversy

Singer and producer J.Y. Park is asking the public to listen to his teachings directly rather than relying on outside evaluations regarding his leadership in the group First Fruits, sportsseoul.com reported on Jan. 8.

Park addressed the public in a video published to the First Fruits YouTube channel on Jan. 8, stating, Park’s church is called a heresy, a pseudo-religion… I hope you will just listen once.

The Teachings of First Fruits

The core of the group’s focus centers on distinct interpretations of salvation and eternal life. Park stated that his understanding—that a person who has repented gains eternal life through the faith given as a gift by God—stems from the influence of Wesleyan Methodism.

He stated that he was influenced by the fundamentalist independent Baptist teachings associated with Peter Ruckman regarding whether a person who has obtained salvation can lose it again.

He explained that he does not follow any single existing denomination’s dogmas strictly. Instead, he formulated his own perspective through independent scripture study after taking influences from Methodism and independent baptism.

First Fruits Grew from Informal Bible Study into a Formal Organization

He later described the gatherings in a 2020 appearance on MBC’s Radio Star as an informal Bible study group among friends.

The meetings have since grown into a formal organization with eight regional chapters holding services in locations including Seoul, Busan, and Los Angeles. However, no conclusion has emerged yet, meaning it is not appropriate to prematurely judge First Fruits as a heresy at present.

Distinguishing Religious Heresy from Pseudo-Religions Involving Social Harms

‘Heresy’ is commonly understood as a religious concept that examines whether a specific doctrine within a given religion aligns with orthodox theology. On the other hand, a ‘pseudo-religion’ is not a legally established religious classification, but an expression frequently used critically to designate organizations where social harms—such as monetary exploitation of people using religion as a front, control of believers, or illegal acts—are discussed.

Public Figures Face Scrutiny When Personal Faith Intersects with Family Life

However, public figures often face heightened scrutiny when personal faith intersects with family life and public messaging.

A prominent international parallel involves actor Tom Cruise, whose decades-long adherence to Scientology frequently drew global attention, notably during his 2006 marriage to actor Katie Holmes, with whom he had a daughter named Suri, leading up to their 2012 divorce.

At that time, American media outlets intensively reported that Scientology was one of the major issues during their breakup process, though the divorce cannot be blamed on religion alone. While personal faith remains a protected right, public figures carrying large followings possess a distinct capacity to draw individuals into religious organizations through their public statements.
