James Rodríguez Secures Visa, Avoids ICE Complications Ahead of MLS Season
Colombian soccer star James Rodríguez has received his P-1 work visa, clearing the way for his debut with Minnesota United FC just days before the start of the 2026 Major League Soccer season. The resolution came amid heightened immigration enforcement in the Minneapolis–St. Paul area, narrowly avoiding potential complications with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Visa Hurdles and ICE Concerns
Rodríguez initially entered the United States on a tourist visa, which does not permit professional sporting activity. A P-1 visa is required for internationally recognized athletes to train and play in MLS. The timing of his visa application coincided with a period of increased ICE activity in Minnesota, raising concerns about potential intervention.
Operation Metro Surge and Minneapolis Unrest
The situation unfolded against the backdrop of “Operation Metro Surge,” a large-scale federal immigration enforcement initiative deploying over 3,000 ICE agents to the Minneapolis–St. Paul area. This operation has resulted in thousands of arrests and, tragically, two fatal shootings, prompting Minnesota United to temporarily relocate parts of their preseason preparations.
Fatalities and Community Impact
On January 7, ICE agent shot and killed Renée Excellent, 37, while she was inside her car. On January 24, federal agents shot and killed Alex Pretti, 37. Both Good and Pretti were U.S. Citizens. These incidents have deeply impacted the Minneapolis community.
Minnesota United and a Hope for Positivity
Khaled El-Ahmad, Minnesota United’s chief soccer officer and sporting director, acknowledged the difficult climate, stating the club is “behind our community.” He expressed hope that Rodríguez’s arrival could bring “good energy” to the state. Rodríguez, a former player for Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Everton, signed a six-month contract with Minnesota United through the 2026 World Cup.
Rodríguez’s World Cup Aspirations
Rodríguez has stated his desire to play for the Colombian national team in the 2026 World Cup, potentially his last appearance in the tournament.
