James Tavernier Confirms Departure from Rangers After 11 Years at Ibrox

Rangers captain James Tavernier has announced he will depart the club at the end of the 2025-26 season, bringing an end to his 11-year association with Ibrox. The 34-year-old right-back confirmed the decision via social media, stating he had not been offered a new contract by the Scottish Premiership side.

Tavernier joined Rangers from Wigan Athletic in 2015 and has since made 562 appearances across all competitions, scoring 144 goals and providing 148 assists. He was appointed club captain in 2018 and led the team to the Scottish Premiership title in 2020-21, along with victories in the Scottish Cup and League Cup. He also captained Rangers in their 2022 UEFA Europa League final appearance, where they lost to Eintracht Frankfurt on penalties.

In his announcement, Tavernier emphasized his commitment to seeing out the season properly, saying: “I will continue to give absolutely everything, as I always have until the extremely last day.” He added that the decision to leave was not easy, describing the club as “a huge part of my life and my family’s over the past 11 years.”

Currently, Rangers are involved in a tight title race, sitting one point behind leaders Hearts with five games remaining, while defending champions Celtic trail by two points. Tavernier affirmed the team’s focus remains on pushing for the league title despite his impending departure.

The defender’s exit marks the end of an era at Ibrox, where he became one of the club’s most decorated modern players. His contributions on and off the pitch have been widely acknowledged by fans, teammates, and club officials throughout his tenure.
