Jamie Joseph Reflects on All Blacks Coaching Race, Backs Dave Rennie
Jamie Joseph has publicly addressed his disappointment at missing out on the All Blacks head coaching position, offering his support to newly appointed Dave Rennie and praising the thoroughness of the selection process. The Highlanders coach, preparing for a Super Rugby Pacific match against the Force, acknowledged the competitive nature of the race but expressed understanding regarding the decision.
Disappointment and a Thorough Process
“Yeah, there was disappointment,” Joseph stated. “I thought it was a tight race. It was a good process – really thorough. There were a number of things that me and Rens went through in terms of the process. It was very different to the last time, and you’ve got to commend New Zealand Rugby for providing that kind of process. It certainly was a first for me.”
Support for Dave Rennie
Joseph extended his full support to Rennie, highlighting his qualifications and experience. “Dave getting the job is a real credit to him. He’s a qualified and quality coach who has been to a lot of places, so I wish him well.” He also revealed that Rennie was the first to reach out with a message of support, underscoring the positive spirit within the All Blacks coaching community.
Feedback and Future Prospects
Joseph confirmed he received feedback from the interview panel, describing it as “private… but that is important for me, personally, because it gives me a direction about where to go next. Coaching is a learning job so you’re learning all the time.” Even as acknowledging the setback, he remained open to future opportunities with the All Blacks.
Highlanders Commitment and Assistant Coach Speculation
Despite the All Blacks coaching pursuit, Joseph reaffirmed his commitment to the Highlanders, a role he has held for three years. He addressed speculation regarding potential assistant coaches he might have considered, clarifying that securing a high-quality attack coach was a key consideration given the departures of Leon MacDonald and Jason Holland. He noted the difficulty of finding qualified coaches available mid-season due to existing commitments. Planet Rugby
Distraction and Focus on the Present
Joseph acknowledged a potential distraction to the Highlanders caused by the publicity surrounding the coaching selection process. “I don’t feel like I let the team down but no doubt there was a distraction. There was a lot of publicity in the last month. To be able to put it to bed and focus on the Highlanders is what I’m up for.”
Family Support
Joseph expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support he received from his family and wider network. “I’m from a big whānau, a big family – there has been a lot of support for me and my family.”
