Jason Kelce Apologizes for Phone Smashing Incident at Penn State
Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce sparked controversy over the weekend following a heated altercation with a Penn State fan at the ESPN College GameDay event. Videos quickly circulated online showing Kelce smashing the fan’s phone after a verbal exchange.
The Incident
Kelce addressed the incident on Monday Night Countdown, the pregame show for Monday Night Football. The altercation stemmed from a fan approaching Kelce while he was being filmed and making derogatory remarks about his brother, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, and Travis’ relationship with pop star Taylor Swift. The fan reportedly used a homophobic slur during the exchange. Kelce responded by taking the phone and breaking it on the ground.
“I’m not happy with anything that took place,” Kelce stated on Monday Night Countdown. “I’m not proud of it. In a heated moment, I chose to greet hate with hate, and I don’t think that’s a productive thing. In that moment, I fell down to a level that I shouldn’t have… I try to live my life by the golden rule, that’s what I’ve always been taught. I try to treat people with common decency and respect, and I’m going to keep doing that moving forward, even though I fell short this week.”
