Jeff Bridges, the acclaimed actor known for roles in films like “The Big Lebowski” and “Crazy Heart,” faced a grueling battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Diagnosed in 2020, Bridges revealed in a recent interview with People Magazine that he initially had no idea how serious his condition was.
While filming intense fight scenes for season one of FX’s “The Old Man,” Bridges unknowingly had a 9-by-12-inch tumor growing in his stomach. “God, looking back on those, I really winced because I didn’t know it at the time, but I had a 9 by 12 inch tumor in my stomach — 9 by 12! — while I’m getting smacked around and punched in the stomach and stuff,” Bridges shared. “Didn’t hurt. There was no pain. But then I had this long hiatus [from filming].”
Bridges’ cancer diagnosis sent shockwaves through Hollywood, leaving fans concerned for his well-being. During his treatment, he contracted COVID-19, adding another layer of complexity to his battle. At one point, Bridges admitted, “I thought I might just kick the bucket.”
Despite the grim reality, Bridges discovered a strength within himself. “I wasn’t fighting, more of a surrendering,” he explained. “And out of that surrender, like I say, all of this intense love surfaced, and maybe that’s what caused me to survive, I don’t know. But I didn’t relate to the fighting thing.”
Bridges’ determination to live fueled his recovery. He set small goals, including walking his daughter Hayley down the aisle at her wedding. “I didn’t know how I could do that, but I said, ‘Well, let’s train. Let’s put that as our goal,'” Bridges recalled. “So we worked on that. And turned out, not only did I walk her down the aisle, but I got to do the wedding dance with her. Then I’d rush to my table and put my oxygen on!”
Today, Bridges’ tumor has shrunk significantly, and his oncologist reports positive progress. While Bridges remains vigilant, his outlook is optimistic. “Everything’s going real well,” he shared.
Bridges’ experience taught him valuable lessons. “All of your strategies for life, how you work — all of those get heightened,” he shared. “And love, that’s the word that comes to mind. To see how much I love my family and my friends and the nurses and doctors that were caring for me, and how much love is coming at me. Basically, it just exacerbated love, basically.”
Bridges’ story is a testament to the power of the human spirit. His journey serves as a reminder that even in the face of adversity, love and determination can conquer all.
