OVW Referee Hospitalized After In-Ring Medical Emergency, Jim Cornette Criticizes Response

Louisville, KY – Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) referee Dallas Edwards is currently hospitalized after suffering a medical emergency during a match on Thursday, March 12, 2026. The incident, which involved Edwards being struck during a diving move and subsequently experiencing seizure-like symptoms, has drawn sharp criticism from wrestling personality Jim Cornette, who has suggested potential legal ramifications for the promotion.

Incident Details

During the main event of OVW Rise, referee Dallas Edwards was inadvertently struck by wrestler Brendan Balling during a top-rope maneuver against Tony Evans. Edwards fell to the mat, hitting the back of his head, and then began convulsing in the ring according to reports. The match initially continued around the fallen referee before the severity of the situation became apparent and medical personnel intervened.

Cornette’s Outspoken Criticism

Jim Cornette addressed the incident on his YouTube channel on March 14, 2026, calling it one of the most disturbing injury situations he has ever witnessed in professional wrestling as reported by Ringside News and Wrestling News Source. He specifically criticized the decision to continue the match whereas Edwards was motionless, stating it should have been immediately obvious that the situation was not part of the planned performance.

“A referee went into a fing seizure, as bad as I have ever seen a person have a fing seizure, including all those boxing knockout videos,” Cornette stated. He further commented on the apparent lack of immediate concern from the wrestlers involved, describing the scene as “ridiculous.”

Potential Legal Action

Cornette warned that OVW could face significant legal consequences depending on the extent of Edwards’ injuries. He stated, “The bosses over at OVW better have deep pockets given that if this ain’t a lawsuit, I’ve never seen one, either from this kid or from his family. We don’t know yet. All we’ve seen is the video that’s been position out.”

OVW’s Response and Future Safety Measures

OVW executive Al Snow has issued a statement acknowledging a communication breakdown contributed to the delay in stopping the match. Snow indicated the company is reviewing its procedures and plans to implement improved safety measures, including enhanced communication systems and additional referee training according to WAVE3 News.

Edwards’ Condition

As of March 13, 2026, Edwards was reported to be awake, coherent, and in good spirits while being monitored for a brain injury according to Yahoo Sports. His girlfriend shared a statement expressing gratitude for the support received from the wrestling community and indicated that further details would be provided to those already informed.

Brendan Balling, the wrestler involved in the maneuver, also expressed remorse, calling Edwards “one of the best refs I’ve ever had” and stating he felt “horrible” about the incident.
