Jim Furyk to Take on Lead Analyst Role with Golf Channel
Jim Furyk, the 2003 U.S. Open champion, will join Golf Channel as a lead analyst for the upcoming Arnold Palmer Invitational and Players Championship. This marks a significant step into broadcasting for the veteran PGA Tour professional.
Furyk’s Transition to the Broadcast Booth
Furyk will be in the lead analyst chair alongside Terry Gannon for Thursday and Friday coverage of both tournaments. Golfweek reports that Roger Maltbie will contribute as an on-course reporter for both events.
The 55-year-old Furyk, a 17-time PGA Tour winner, has been a consistent presence on the PGA Tour Champions, earning Rookie of the Year honors in 2021 and hosting the Furyk & Friends event. While his television experience is limited, he has frequently appeared on SiriusXM radio and is accustomed to media interactions throughout his three-decade career.
A New Trend in Golf Broadcasting
Furyk’s appointment continues a trend of major championship winners transitioning into lead analyst roles. Historically, these positions have been largely held by players with major victories. Golf.com notes that this tradition was recently challenged by Kevin Kisner at NBC, who, like Furyk, brought a major championship pedigree to the role.
Furyk acknowledged the opportunity as a trial basis, stating, “It’s probably on a trial basis, see how much I like it, get a feel for it.” He emphasized the learning process involved in adapting to the flow and feel of television broadcasting.
Previous Broadcast Experience
Furyk isn’t entirely new to television. He previously joined the broadcast booth for the 2004 Players Championship, providing him with some initial experience in the role. Golfweek
Looking Ahead
Golf Channel will broadcast four hours of coverage on Thursday and Friday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, transitioning to two hours on the weekend before NBC’s coverage. At the Players Championship, Golf Channel will provide six hours of coverage on Thursday and Friday, with NBC taking over for the weekend. Furyk’s performance in these two events will be closely watched as he explores a potential future in golf broadcasting.
