Director of THE WORLD, Joaquín Manso, considered this Wednesday that the European Union “under no circumstances” can allow itself “a weakening of its transatlantic link” due to its “military, industrial and technological” dependence as part of NATO. An alliance that could be diminished and even broken if Donald Trump returns to the White House. “There is no other organization that can take charge of the defense of the continent like NATO does,” she warned.

Manso participated alongside the directors of Abc, Julian Quirosand of The confidential, Nacho Carderoat the round table Europe in transformation: is strategic autonomy possible?organized by the FAES Foundation as part of its annual campus. A meeting in which the three also addressed the role that the media are playing in a context marked by war, inflation and the fight against fake news or new technological elements, such as artificial intelligence. The presentation was moderated by Mira Milosevichinternational policy analyst and member of the Board of Trustees of the FAES Foundation.

In this context, the importance of the European Union maintaining its sovereignty and multilateralism is maximum in a scenario in which the media play a fundamental role: “The autonomy of the EU will advance depending on how the citizen and public opinion consider it useful,” Manso said.

The director of EL MUNDO expressed that, despite the uncertainty that hovers over the international arena due to the war in Ukraine, the blows of the pandemic or the rise of “black swans” in politics and the economy, the European Union faces a moment “reasonably favorable.” The proof, he said, is that the information coming from Brussels as a result of the conflict in Ukraine is increasingly consumed with more interest. “We are facing the flame of a shared feeling,” he said, which can lead to the “development of political will” and which will have its true litmus test in the 2024 European elections.

The three directors agreed that the United States is a fundamental ally of the European Union and pointed out how the return of Donald Trump to the White House in the next elections could put at risk this country’s relationship with Ukraine, as well as with the allies of NATO. A scenario to which public opinion feels increasingly closer thanks to the information trends of the last year, marked by the community response to the pandemic, the war or the inflationary crisis.
