Johan Santana Enjoys Spring Training with Son, Reflects on Legacy

Venezuelan baseball legend Johan Santana is currently enjoying his time as a guest coach with the Minnesota Twins during Spring Training. The experience is particularly special as he shares it with his son, Johan Jr., who is in his penultimate year of high school and on winter break.

A Father-Son Experience at Twins Camp

During a day at Twins camp in Fort Myers, Florida, where the temperature reached 27 degrees Celsius (80 degrees Fahrenheit), Santana spoke with MLB.com’s Matthew Leach about the joy of having his son present. “Nothing better than spending time here at the ball park,” Santana said.

Johan Jr. Has been actively involved, assisting media relations staff and serving as an interpreter during interviews with Venezuelan player Orlando Arcia. “It’s amazing,” Santana Jr. Shared. “I’m blessed to have the opportunity to be here and learn from everyone who works here. It’s a great learning opportunity. I am highly grateful to be able to be here.”

Guiding the Next Generation

Santana expressed his contentment watching his son learn and grow, even as also contemplating the importance of allowing children to forge their own paths. He emphasized that his son doesn’t need to follow in his footsteps.

“As a parent, you always want the best for your children. Just because you have my name and I played this sport, you don’t have to be like me. Not at all. Not in my house. That’s not how we do things,” Santana stated. “But at the same time, you have the opportunity to see how we do things beyond the lime lines. And for me, that’s important.”

Exploring Options Beyond the Field

Santana acknowledged that his son is currently exploring various interests, including sports management. He reiterated his support for Johan Jr.’s choices, emphasizing the value of gaining experience and perspective outside of playing the game.

“He’s in high school, so he’s trying to figure out what he’s going to do. Don’t know. Right now he is interested in sports, management and all that. But I’m his dad. I’m not your boss. Whatever he wants to do. But I reckon being close and seeing what is beyond those two lines is important,” Santana concluded.
