John Mulaney returned to Saturday Night Live for his sixth time hosting, bringing with him a mix of hilarious observations and a somewhat concerning health update.
Mulaney on Aging and “Feminine Hips”
At 42, Mulaney joked about the realities of aging, saying, “My parents picked a bad time to get old. When I was younger, I maybe could have helped them. But I can’t now. I’m 42. I don’t feel well either.” His brother’s recent call about their mother falling only solidified this sentiment.
Referencing his well-known joke about having “feminine hips,” Mulaney added, “My feminine hips are back…and they may need to be replaced.”
Mulaney revealed he has a tear in his right labrum and undergoes weekly physical therapy, which he finds surprisingly bonding.
“We lay on mats. We press the small of our backs into the mats to stabilize ourselves,” he said, further detailing the routine. “Then, we do these tiny little crunches to strengthen our muscles and vaginas.”
However, the comedic relief took a turn when he shared the therapist’s concerning diagnosis: “Out of all the women in the class, the teacher singled me out and said that I’m not going to benefit from physical therapy long-term and I wouldn’t even benefit from a laparoscopic procedure, and that I should eventually have hip replacement surgery.” Mulaney concluded his “hip replacement” topic with a darkly humorous, yet relatable, line: “I’m going to get my hip replaced and my mom is going to give me a ride home.”
