Trump Posts Cuban Band Song After Puerto Rican Backlash: John Oliver Cracks Jokes

John Oliver took aim at Donald Trump’s attempted damage control following a controversial joke about Puerto Rico at the former president’s rally in Madison Square Garden.

On Sunday’s episode of Last Week Tonight, Oliver highlighted Trump’s response to the backlash sparked by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s set, which included the remark that Puerto Rico is a “floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean.” Trump seemingly tried to deflect the criticism by sharing a video of a Cuban band, Los Tres de la Habana, performing “The Trump Song” in 2020.

“He posted that without comment. And if it was meant as an apology to Puerto Ricans, it’s worth noting that is a Cuban band,” Oliver noted, clearly amused by the situation.

“Although, I do admit that is a very catchy song, and I do appreciated that the lyrics are, ‘Oh my god, I will vote for Trump’,” Oliver continued, while laughing. “Which sounds like someone realizing in real time that they’re an absolute dip—.”

Oliver’s segment followed Vice President Kamala Harris’s fiery speech on Tuesday in front of the White House, where she condemned Trump’s rhetoric and the dangers of authoritarianism. Harris’s speech, delivered to a large crowd of supporters, emphasized the importance of democratic values and the need for unity.

The speech also contrasted the vice president’s approach with Trump’s, highlighting her commitment to finding common ground and inclusivity.

“Unlike Donald Trump, I don’t believe people who disagree with me are the enemy. He wants to put them in jail. I will give them a seat at the table,” Harris stated.

The episode also covered the FCC equal time complaints filed against NBC after Harris made a cameo appearance on Saturday Night Live, leading to Trump being given 90 seconds of free ad time during its Sunday NASCAR coverage.
