The Rangers are ready to reunite with one of their 2023 World Series mainstays, agreeing to a one-year contract with left-hander Jordan Montgomery, a source told MLB.com’s Kennedi Landry on Wednesday. Evan Grant, Dallas Morning Newsreported that the agreement is US$1.25 million, a figure that the club has not confirmed.
Montgomery won’t be ready for the start of the season as he is still rehabbing after undergoing Tommy John surgery last April. It is the second procedure of this type in his career; The first was in 2018, in his second season in MLB.
Prior to his most recent action in 2024, Montgomery had a three-year stretch between 2021 and 2023 in which he was a reliable, though never dominant, starter. He made at least 30 starts and had an ERA better than 4.00 in each campaign, while his FIP totals grouped together at 3.69, 3.61 and 3.56, respectively.
The 2023 season was Montgomery’s best, with a 3.20 ERA — and a career-best 136 ERA+ — in 32 starts and 188.2 innings. But that’s only what he accomplished during the regular season. That year actually stands out for the lefty because of what he accomplished with the Rangers, whom he joined following a midseason trade from the Cardinals.
He first pitched seven scoreless innings against the Rays in Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series and then threw 6.1 scoreless innings against the Astros in Game 1 of the ALCS about two weeks later. Overall, he went 3-1 with a 2.90 earned run percentage in six appearances that October (five starts), helping the Rangers to the first World Series title in franchise history.
