Rachael Leigh Cook Addresses ‘Josie and the Pussycats’ Sequel Speculation
Rachael Leigh Cook has dismissed the possibility of a sequel to the 2001 film Josie and the Pussycats, 25 years after the movie’s release. The film, based on the Archie Comics series of the same name, starred Cook, Tara Reid, and Rosario Dawson as the members of a pop band who unwittingly become pawns in a corporate conspiracy to manipulate the public through subliminal messaging.
Cult Following and Sequel Talk
Despite being a box office disappointment upon its initial release, Josie and the Pussycats has garnered a dedicated cult following in recent years, leading to discussions about a potential follow-up. However, Cook told People, “I don’t feel I would require to touch it myself. I’m proud of what we made. Maybe if they did some time traveling, maybe there’s something that could be weird and captivating.”
Cook added, “I do not think that there’s any talk of anything like that. It took long enough for people to acquire it the first time. We’re not gonna push our luck, I don’t think.”
Rediscovery and Appreciation
The actress acknowledged the film’s newfound appreciation, stating, “People are rediscovering that movie after it being considered an absolute box-office flop and only getting its flowers as it were in the last couple of years, maybe the last decade or so.” She expressed her gratitude for the film’s enduring appeal, saying, “It feels awesome…better late than never. It’s easy to make a movie that just sort of falls into the abyss. I’ve certainly made a lot of those, and I’m just glad that this extremely deserving movie ultimately found an audience.”
