Juliana Stratton Wins Illinois Senate Democratic Primary, Setting Stage for November Election

Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton has won the Democratic primary race to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, defeating U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi and U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly in a closely watched contest. Stratton’s victory marks a significant moment for Illinois Democrats and tests the political influence of Gov. JB Pritzker.

A Competitive Primary

The race to succeed Durbin, who has served in the Senate since 1997, was one of the most expensive and competitive Senate primaries in the nation. Krishnamoorthi significantly outspent his opponents, raising over $30 million for his campaign, even as Stratton raised over $4 million and Kelly over $3 million. However, a pro-Stratton PAC, Illinois Future PAC, bolstered her campaign with over $10 million in funding, largely from Gov. Pritzker, who contributed at least $5 million.

Stratton’s Victory and Key Support

With 85% of votes counted, Stratton led with 39.7% of the vote, followed by Krishnamoorthi at 33.4% and Kelly at 18.4%. Stratton’s momentum stemmed from a strong debate performance in January and effective advertising in the final weeks of the campaign. She outperformed Krishnamoorthi in key regions including the Metro East, Sangamon County, Chicago, and some Cook County suburbs.

Governor Pritzker’s endorsement and financial support were crucial to Stratton’s success, rebuffing critics who questioned his commitment to her candidacy. Stratton acknowledged Pritzker, Sen. Tammy Duckworth, and other allies as “steadfast partners and friends” in her victory speech.

Looking Ahead to the General Election

Stratton will now face Don Tracy, the expected winner of the Republican primary, in the November general election. Given Illinois’s voting history – having elected only two Republicans to the Senate since 1996 – Stratton is considered the strong favorite.

If elected, Stratton would be the fourth African American to represent Illinois in the U.S. Senate, joining Carol Moseley Braun, Barack Obama, and Roland Burris.

Durbin’s Legacy and Senate Leadership

The election marks the end of Dick Durbin’s nearly 30-year tenure in the Senate. Durbin, the Senate Democratic Whip, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and looks forward to passing the torch to Stratton. His retirement is expected to trigger a broader reshuffling of Democratic Senate leadership.
