Kalyn Ponga Chooses Kiwis, Eyes 2026 Rugby League World Cup
Newcastle Knights captain Kalyn Ponga has officially switched his international rugby league allegiance from Australia to New Zealand, becoming eligible for the Kiwis ahead of the 2026 Rugby League World Cup. The decision follows recent changes to State of Origin eligibility rules, allowing players to represent both New Zealand or England and their adopted state in the annual series.
A Change of Heart and Heritage
Ponga, born in Port Hedland, Western Australia, to New Zealand parents, previously represented Queensland in the State of Origin series and played for Australia in the 2019 Nines tournament and for the Junior Kangaroos. However, he stated that these appearances did not fully reflect his national identity. “These were appearances I am grateful for; however, upon reflection, they do not reflect where my heart, my heritage, and my deepest sense of belonging truly lie,” Ponga wrote in his application to the International Rugby League (IRL) as reported by the ABC.
He emphasized his deep connection to his Māori heritage and New Zealand, stating, “While I was born in Australia, my connection to New Zealand runs deep through every generation of my family…My roots, my whakapapa, and my identity are firmly grounded in this country and its people.” Ponga has also made three appearances for the Māori All Stars.
Impact on the Kiwis and Future Eligibility
The IRL unanimously approved Ponga’s application on Wednesday night, clearing the way for his debut with the Kiwis at the 2026 Rugby League World Cup. Sky Sports reports that this acquisition is a significant boost to New Zealand’s hopes of winning their first World Cup title since 2008.
The change in eligibility rules means Ponga remains eligible for State of Origin, as he lived in Queensland during his youth. He will join a strong Kiwi squad that includes players like James Fisher-Harris, Leo Thompson, and his Newcastle Knights teammate, Dylan Brown.
The IRL has stated that once a player switches tier-one eligibility, the decision is final, meaning Ponga will no longer be able to represent the Kangaroos. NRL.com notes that this decision comes after a period of eligibility changes within the sport.
