Kanlaon Volcano Remains Active: Authorities Issue Alert

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has maintained Alert Level 3 for Kanlaon Volcano, which straddles the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, following a recent spike in volcanic activity.

Kanlaon, known for its frequent unrest, has exhibited 23 volcanic earthquakes in the past 24 hours, and a significant release of 4,186 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on Friday. Moderate ash plumes, reaching 75 meters in height, have also been observed drifting southwestwards. These developments signal increased magmatic activity beneath the volcano.

Alert Level 3 indicates that hazardous eruption scenarios are possible, prompting authorities to urge residents and tourists to exercise caution. PHIVOLCS strongly advises against any activities within a six-kilometer radius of the volcano’s summit.

Potential dangers associated with Kanlaon’s heightened activity include:

  • Sudden explosive eruptions
  • Lava flows or effusions
  • Ashfall
  • Pyroclastic density currents
  • Rockfall
  • Lahars (volcanic mudflows) during heavy rains

"Kanlaon Volcano is an active volcano, and we must respect its power," stresses Dr. Maya Reyes, a Volcanologist with PHIVOLCS. "While we cannot predict eruptions with certainty, we can monitor the volcano closely and issue timely warnings to protect lives and property."

PHIVOLCS continues to closely monitor Kanlaon Volcano, utilizing a network of seismic sensors, gas monitoring systems, and visual observations. Hourly updates and official advisories are regularly issued through official channels.

The recent activity serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and vigilance in areas susceptible to volcanic hazards. Communities are encouraged to stay informed, follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities, and take necessary steps to mitigate potential risks.
