KaOS Linux Shifts Away From KDE Plasma in Pursuit of Systemd Independence

After a 12-year partnership, KaOS Linux has made a significant change, abandoning KDE Plasma as its default desktop environment. This decision, announced in February 2026, stems from the distribution’s desire to move away from its reliance on Systemd, an init system that has become a point of contention within the Linux community.

The Systemd Dilemma

The shift comes as KDE Plasma increasingly integrates with Systemd, particularly with components like the Plasma Login Manager requiring it. While the KDE team has clarified that not all of Plasma necessitates Systemd, and workarounds exist, the KaOS developers determined that maintaining a non-Systemd base while fully supporting Plasma would become increasingly difficult. KaOS developers explained that Systemd 254 was the last release to fully support their split /usr design, and later versions introduced incompatibilities.

Introducing Niri and Noctalia

The latest KaOS release, 2026.02, now features Niri with the Qt-based Noctalia shell. This combination offers a drastically different user experience compared to the feature-rich KDE Plasma. Users booting from the live USB will find a minimalistic interface, devoid of flashy graphics, large icons, or special effects. As noted by XDA Developers, the novel KaOS is remarkably simple and aesthetically pleasing.

A Qt-Focused Approach

Despite the departure from Plasma, KaOS remains committed to being a Qt-focused distribution. The team recognizes the value of KDE’s applications and has ensured that tools like the KDE Partition Manager and KWrite remain available in the repositories, even after removing Plasma as the default. This allows users to continue leveraging the functionality they appreciate while the distribution explores alternative system designs. KaOS developers have stated that Plasma 6 is still fully available in the repositories.

Underlying System Changes

Alongside the desktop environment change, KaOS 2026.02 also updates its system components. Limine is now the default bootloader, replacing systemd-boot, and the distribution has moved to Systemd 255.22, with plans to upgrade to 257.10 in future installations. This reflects the ongoing effort to modernize the distribution while maintaining its independence from Systemd’s deeper integrations.

The Future of KaOS

The decision to move away from KDE Plasma is not necessarily permanent. The KaOS team views the release of 2026.02 as a testing ground, gauging user response to the new Niri/Noctalia setup. Work is also underway to explore the feasibility of adopting Dinit as an alternative init system. According to KaOS’s announcement, the team hopes to settle on a system that balances stability, functionality, and independence.
