Peter Keane Appointed Clare Senior Football Manager
Former Kerry boss Peter Keane is set to become the new manager of the Clare senior footballers, succeeding fellow Kerryman Mark Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald Steps Down After Successful Season
After guiding Clare to a Munster final appearance and a spot in the All-Ireland series, Fitzgerald has departed after just one season to take up a role with the Kerry U-20s.
Keane’s Impressive Kerry Record
Keane, known for his successful tenure managing Kerry minors, winning three consecutive All-Irelands from 2016 to 2018, subsequently took the reins of the senior team. During his time with Kerry, Keane led the team to an All-Ireland final replay loss against Dublin in his first year. Despite facing challenges, including a last-gasp Cork goal eliminating them from the Munster semi-finals in the Covid championship and a heartbreaking extra-time defeat to Tyrone in the 2021 All-Ireland semi-final, Keane’s leadership earned him recognition.
Keane’s Departure From Kerry
A few weeks later, Keane’s tenure with Kerry concluded, and Jack O’Connor returned for his third stint as manager.
Clare Welcomes Keane
Keane’s appointment to Clare was recommended by a selection committee comprising chairperson Kieran Keating, head of operations Deirdre Murphy, former players Dermot Coughlan, and David Tubridy. His ratification as manager is expected at the November county board meeting.
Looking Ahead to 2025
Clare will commence 2025 in Division 3 of the Allianz League. The possibility of another Munster final clash against Kerry looms large, with both counties drawn apart in the recent provincial draw, setting the stage for a potential rematch in May.
