Kevin Durant’s Game 4 Status Remains Uncertain as Rockets Face Elimination

Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka provided an update on Kevin Durant’s injury status ahead of a potential Game 4 against the Los Angeles Lakers, confirming the superstar forward is improving but his availability remains unclear as Houston tries to avoid a sweep in the Western Conference playoffs.

Durant missed Game 3 with a sprained left ankle, an injury he sustained late in Game 2 after returning from a bruised right knee that kept him out of the series opener. According to Udoka, Durant has been receiving treatment around the clock and has made progress in reducing swelling, but a final decision on his participation will come after a pre-game assessment.

“He’s getting treatment still around the clock,” Udoka said. “I think there’s some soreness and (he’s) pushed a lot of swelling out, but it’ll be a matter of if he can travel. We’ll try it out I’m sure tomorrow morning and before the game, and we’ll know his status then.”

The Rockets lost Game 3 in overtime, 112-108, after blowing a six-point lead with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation. Durant did not play in that contest, and Houston has now fallen behind 0-3 in the best-of-seven series. In Game 2, Durant played 41 minutes and scored 23 points before aggravating his ankle late in the game.

When asked about Durant’s likelihood of playing in Game 4, Udoka noted that each day of recovery improves the odds, but cautioned that progress in practice does not always translate to game readiness. “Every day that goes by, the likelihood goes up,” he said. “But I thought he might be OK (Friday) based on shootaround and that’s different going half speed and then ramping it up right before a game. And so you really can’t tell, but he’s doing everything he can to get back.”

Durant, who is in his first season with Houston after a trade from Phoenix, has dealt with multiple injuries this postseason. He missed Game 1 due to a knee contusion suffered in practice ahead of the Round 1 series. Despite his injury struggles, Durant ranked second in the NBA in minutes played during the regular season with 2,840 minutes and remains the fifth-leading scorer in league history.

The Lakers won Game 1 by nine points, 107-98, and took Game 2 by a score of 101-94. With the Rockets facing elimination, Durant’s potential return could be critical to Houston’s hopes of extending the series, though his status will not be finalized until shortly before tip-off.
