Kings’ Kevin Fiala to Miss Remainder of Season After Olympic Injury

Los Angeles Kings forward Kevin Fiala will miss the remainder of the 2025-26 NHL season after suffering a leg injury while playing for Switzerland at the 2026 Winter Olympics, the team announced Sunday. The injury occurred during Switzerland’s 5-1 loss to Canada on Friday in Milan, Italy.

Injury Details and Surgery

Fiala underwent surgery Saturday to repair fractures in his left lower leg and is currently resting comfortably, according to a statement released by the Kings via CBS News. He will begin a rehabilitation program soon, but is expected to be sidelined for the rest of the NHL season.

The injury occurred late in the third period when Fiala became entangled with Canadian forward Tom Wilson near the boards. Wilson’s weight fell onto Fiala’s leg, causing the injury. No penalty was called on the play.

Impact on Switzerland and the Kings

Fiala was immediately ruled out for the remainder of the Olympic tournament. Swiss coach Patrick Fischer described the incident as “accidental” according to NBC Olympics, while Wilson expressed regret, stating it was “just unlucky” and wishing Fiala a quick recovery.

The loss of Fiala is a significant blow to both Switzerland’s medal hopes and the Kings’ playoff aspirations. Fiala is second in team scoring with 40 points and 18 goals in 56 games this season as reported by ClutchPoints.

Kings teammate Adrian Kempe expressed sadness over the injury, emphasizing Fiala’s importance to the team: “It’s really tough for him personally and for us as a team. You know how much he means to our team back home in L.A.” ClutchPoints.

Kings’ Playoff Push

The Kings, currently three points out of a playoff spot in the Western Conference, recently acquired Artemi Panarin from the New York Rangers before the Olympic break in an attempt to bolster their chances of reaching the postseason. Fiala’s absence will undoubtedly make that task more challenging.

This is not the first time an Olympic injury has impacted an NHL team. In 2014, John Tavares’ season with the New York Islanders was cut short by a knee injury sustained while playing for Canada at the Sochi Olympics CBS News.
