Kneecap Sweeps BIFAs: A Night of Triumph for Irish Film
The British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) saw “Kneecap,” a critically acclaimed biopic about a Belfast rap group, take home the top honor – Best British Independent Film, along with six other awards. The film’s writer/director Rich Peppiatt, along with its stars Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin, and JJ Ó Dochartaigh, shone brightly on Sunday night, cementing the film’s significance in British independent cinema.
Kneecap Wins Big
Throughout the evening, “Kneecap” secured wins in several key categories: Best Debut Screenwriter for Peppiatt, Best Joint Lead Performance for its trio of actors, and Best Original Music for Mikey J Asante. Not stopping there, “Kneecap” also landed the coveted award for Best Editing, Production Design, and Sound.
Rungano Nyoni took home the Best Director award for her poignant film, “On Becoming a Guinea Fowl,” which explores themes of family secrets and buried truths in a Zambian setting. Susan Chardy, the breakout star of “On Becoming a Guinea Fowl,” won Best Breakthrough Performance, further recognizing the film’s exceptional talent.
