Remembering the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake: A Legacy of Remembrance

Kobe, Japan – Bereaved families and government leaders reaffirmed their dedication Saturday to preserving the memories and lessons of the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake for future generations. The commitment came as the Kansai region observed the 31st anniversary of the devastating natural disaster.

The earthquake, which struck at 5:46 a.m. on January 17, 1995, resulted in 6,434 fatalities and widespread destruction. A memorial ceremony held in Kobe saw participants light bamboo and paper lanterns, followed by a moment of silence to honor the victims.
