Remembering a Grigna Legend: The Legacy of Marco Anghileri
Eleven years after his untimely passing, the remarkable life and achievements of mountaineer Marco Anghileri, affectionately known as “Butch,” were celebrated by the Mountain Community Lario Orientale Valle San Martino, alongside his family and representatives from the Italian Alpine Club (ANDE).A well-attended gathering at the Lecco Chamber of Commerce served as the venue for a moving tribute.
A Life Etched in Stone: The “La Grigna del butch” Film
The centerpiece of the evening was a screening of “La Grigna del Butch,” a documentary dedicated to preserving the memory of Anghileri’s exceptional ascents on the iconic Grignetta peaks. The film highlights two especially extraordinary feats: his and Fabio Valseschini’s consecutive repetition of three challenging routes pioneered by Giuseppe “Det” alippi – the Forcellino, the Torrione Costanza, and the Sasso Cavallo – and his groundbreaking 1995 accomplishment of completing eight routes in a single day, all in the demanding “Free Solo” style. This latter achievement, akin to a modern-day mountaineering triathlon, effectively traced the entire history of climbing on the Grigna.
Currently,Free Solo climbing remains one of the most risky forms of the sport, with a fatality rate estimated at around 1 in 1000 attempts, highlighting the immense skill and courage Anghileri possessed.
Honoring a Pioneer: Words from Leadership
The event commenced with tributes from prominent figures recognizing Anghileri’s impact.Federica Picchi,Undersecretary for Sport of the Lombardy Region,Mauro Piazza,Undersecretary of lecco, giacomo zamperini,President of the Regional Mountain Commission, and Gianmario Fragomeri all offered their respects.the evening concluded with remarks from Mauro Gattinoni, the Mayor of Lecco.
Beyond the Ascent: A Search for Meaning
Antonio Rusconi, the newly appointed President of the Mountain community, opened the formal program with a personal reflection on his encounter with Anghileri, facilitated by the renowned mountaineer Daniele “Ciapin” Chiappa. Rusconi emphasized that Anghileri was more than just a skilled climber; he was a thoughtful individual who constantly questioned the motivations behind pushing boundaries and exploring the mountains. He wasn’t simply focused on conquering peaks, but on understanding why he climbed and what he hoped to discover through the experience.
A Lasting Inspiration: Emotion and Adventure
Giorgio Spreafico, a respected journalist, eloquently captured the essence of Anghileri’s spirit, stating, “it wasn’t just about achieving the first ascent, but the second and third as well.” Spreafico continued, noting that Anghileri’s success stemmed from a deep-seated drive, even when he wasn’t fully aware of his own capabilities. He found clarity and purpose on the Grigna, seeking out the challenges that truly resonated with him.Spreafico beautifully summarized that alpinism transcends mere statistics; it’s about the emotional connection, the thrill of adventure, the pursuit of freedom, and the journey of self-discovery.
