Scientists have discovered a correlation between social tolerance in macaque species and the size of their amygdala, a key brain region involved in processing emotions and social signals. This finding challenges the traditional view of the amygdala as primarily a center for aggression, suggesting it plays a more complex role in managing social relationships.
The Link Between Brain Size and Social Behavior
Research led by Sarah Silvère at the University of Strasbourg (Unistra) reveals that macaque species exhibiting more flexible and tolerant social interactions possess a larger amygdala relative to their overall brain size. This suggests a potential link between neural structure and social style.
How Macaques are Categorized by Social Style
Primatologists categorize macaques into four social grades based on the frequency with which fights conclude with conciliatory contact. Across the approximately 25 macaque species, some groups adhere to strict hierarchies and respond quickly to challenges, while others demonstrate looser hierarchies, more frequent reconciliation after conflicts, and social bonds that shift depending on the situation.
The Amygdala’s Role in Social Processing
Deep within the brain, the amygdala processes emotional cues and social signals, helping primates assess intentions and judge faces. Signals from the amygdala connect to memory and control circuits, influencing whether reactions are amplified or suppressed. Studies in humans have linked larger amygdala volume to more extensive social networks, suggesting a connection between brain anatomy and social engagement.
Early Brain Development and Social Tolerance
The study found that tolerant species start life with larger amygdalae compared to their more combative counterparts. This early difference raises questions about whether these neural variations are inherited or develop through lifelong social experiences.
Hippocampal Differences and Social Learning
While the amygdala showed a clear correlation with social tolerance, the hippocampus – a region involved in contextual memory – displayed a more nuanced pattern. During adolescence (ages 13-18 years), less tolerant species exhibited smaller hippocampal volumes compared to more tolerant species. However, this difference was less consistent outside of this age range.
Brain Aging and Social Tolerance
The research also examined how brain structure changes with age. Interestingly, tolerant and intolerant species followed opposite trajectories. In the most tolerant species, the amygdala grew over time, while in the least tolerant species, it declined. However, the researchers note that more data is needed on older brains to confirm this pattern.
The Influence of Social Environment
Studies involving cross-fostering – where mothers from one species raise infants of another – showed that young monkeys adopted the conflict habits of their foster mothers. This suggests that social environment can influence behavior and brain development, even if there is an underlying genetic predisposition.
Implications for Understanding Social Behavior
The findings suggest that a larger amygdala may enhance the capacity to process complex social information, facilitate better social interactions, and manage conflicts. This challenges the traditional view of the amygdala as solely responsible for aggression.

Researchers acknowledge limitations in the study, including the limited availability of brain scans from a diverse range of macaque species and ages. Future research will focus on obtaining more comprehensive data, including long-term MRI scans paired with behavioral records, to better understand how social experiences shape brain development and function. Further investigation into the specific connections within the amygdala that drive tolerance patterns is also planned.
