Multiple Fires Reported Across Riga and Jelgava, Latvia
Several fires broke out across Latvia on Monday, impacting residential buildings in Riga and Jelgava. Emergency services responded to multiple incidents, rescuing individuals and evacuating residents.
Riga Incidents
A fire occurred in a five-story residential building on Sitas Street in Riga. Approximately 10 square meters of household items were destroyed on the fourth floor, resulting in heavy smoke throughout the building. Firefighters successfully rescued five people, with four sustaining injuries. An additional ten residents were evacuated from the building, while five others had already self-evacuated before the arrival of rescuers.
Another fire was reported on Grants Street in Riga, affecting the basement of a two-story residential building. Approximately 15 square meters of household items were damaged, and smoke filled the structure. Firefighters used rescue masks to evacuate five people from the second floor, while seven others left the building on their own.
Jelgava Incident
In Jelgava, a fire broke out in a ground-floor apartment of a two-story building on Dobeles Street. Around 40 square meters of household items were consumed by the flames. Firefighters utilized rescue masks to assist two individuals in escaping the smoke-filled premises via the stairs. One person was rescued from a second-floor window using a three-stage retractable ladder. Five additional residents evacuated the building before the arrival of emergency services. A dog and a rabbit were also safely removed from the premises.
Additional Emergency Responses
Beyond these residential fires, firefighters also responded to incidents involving an abandoned building, a vehicle fire, chimney soot, debris, an outbuilding, a garden shed, and unattended food left on a stove. In total, the State Fire Service responded to 58 calls.
Wildfires Extinguished
Over the past 24 hours, firefighters also extinguished 12 previous year’s grass fires and one forest fire.
