A Modern Take on a Latvian Classic: ‘In the Fire’ at the Latvian National Theatre

The Latvian National Theatre is currently staging a new production of Rudolf Blāzmanis’s seminal play, ‘In the Fire,’ directed by Inese Michule. This production distinguishes itself through its commitment to eco-performance, utilizing sustainable materials and reusable elements as part of the international ‘Greenstage’ project. The play, a cornerstone of Latvian drama, explores themes of love, societal pressure, and the complexities of choice.

Reimagining a Timeless Story

‘In the Fire’ tells the story of Kristīne and Edgars, whose relationship is threatened by gossip and social expectations. The new production, still, aims to address contemporary concerns alongside the classic narrative, focusing on the internal conflict between reason and emotion and the freedom of choice. Notably, this play was the first to be performed at the National Theatre under its current name in 1919, adding historical weight to this new interpretation.

Eco-Performance and Sustainable Design

A key aspect of this production is its dedication to sustainability. Dramaturg Reinis Dzudzilo is responsible for implementing eco-friendly solutions in the set and costume design. This includes the innovative use of donated white wedding dresses, which serve as both costume elements and integral parts of the set. The production’s visual approach centers around a dynamic interplay of objects within the stage space, particularly over a hundred chairs that are rearranged throughout the performance.

A Production Rooted in Tradition and Innovation

The staging draws inspiration from previous interpretations of the play, including Māras Ķimele’s 1987 production in Valmiera, which reflected pre-National Awakening sentiments, and the 2006 musical adaptation, “Hotel Kristina,” created by Māra Zālīte and Jānis Lūsēns. Director Elmārs Senkovs as well offered a modern reading in 2012 with his staging of Blaumanis’ short story, “Swamp Wader.” However, Michule’s production distinguishes itself through its explicit focus on sustainability and its minimalist, abstract aesthetic.

Performances and Critical Reception

The production features Karlis Reijers as Edgars and Elza Rūta Jordāne as Kristīne. Maija Doveika Vešeriene delivers a compelling performance as Kristīne’s mother, whereas Guntars Grasbergs Sutkas and Raimonds Celms portray manipulative characters who influence the central conflict. The premiere took place on March 12 in the theatre’s Great Hall. Critics have noted the production’s thought-provoking approach and the actors’ ability to navigate the unconventional staging, though some have commented on the static nature of the mise-en-scènes and the potential for the set design to overshadow the performances.

A Play for Today

The Latvian National Theatre’s production of ‘In the Fire’ offers a fresh perspective on a beloved classic, prompting audiences to consider the play’s enduring themes in a contemporary context. By embracing eco-friendly practices and innovative design, the production not only honors Blāzmanis’s legacy but also contributes to a more sustainable future for theatre.
