Testifying to Character and Marriage at Southwark Crown Court
Laura Brand testified at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday that her husband, comedian Russell Brand, is “caring” and “kind,” describing their marriage as founded on “honesty.” Her appearance comes as the comedian faces multiple charges of rape and sexual assault, allegations he denies. She told jurors: Russell, my husband, is caring, he is kind, he is a wonderful father to our children.
They now have three children together.
In her evidence, Laura Brand told the court that she and her husband have a “very honest, frank, and clear” relationship. She recounted their history, noting they first met in 2006 after her sister, television presenter Kirsty Gallacher, arranged tickets to one of his shows. He obviously acknowledged my friend, who is very beautiful, and said to my friend have you got a boyfriend?
she said, adding: She said ‘yes, I do’, and he looked at me and said ‘tell me you don’t have a boyfriend’ and I said no.
While she acknowledged he was sexually active with other women during their early dating period in 2006 and 2007, she stated she felt “entirely cared for” by him at the time. She stated Mr Brand had been “totally caring”, and let the relationship progress totally at my pace
.
After their initial period of dating, the couple remained friends during his 14-month marriage to singer Katy Perry, which Brand testified brought him what he described as “staggering fame.” The couple reconciled in 2015 and married in 2017. Laura Brand told jurors that her husband is “an amazingly attentive husband” who treats her with an eye for detail she had “never known before.” She added: The way he treats me is to really know me, I feel very seen by him in every way. I love him very much.
Russell Brand Denies Charges in the Witness Box
The charges involve six women and cover a period between 1999 and 2009. He also denied setting himself a goal to sleep with 5,000 women, stating: I do recognise I have been a very determined and focused man and with regard to the latter, with women, of course, which is the subject of my trial, I’ve been persuasive, seductive, begging and flirting, and dedicated a lot of my life to what seems now beyond-reckless philandering and idiocy.
During his testimony, Brand told the court he had dedicated much of his life to “reckless philandering and idiocy,” but insisted that sexual consent is “non-negotiable” and “more important than sex itself.” He acknowledged that his fame facilitated sexual access, an admission he told the court he now views as “wrong.”
Prosecution Questions Recall and Consistency
Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC questioned Brand regarding his ability to recall specific incidents involving the complainants. The court heard that in police interviews conducted between 2023 and 2025, Brand had stated he could not recall the women or the events in question. When asked about this, Brand claimed the process had been a “deeply traumatic episode” and described his testimony as an “escalating recollection.” Asked if he had found thrusting his head into a complainant’s lap funny, Brand replied: I don’t remember. I don’t think it’s funny now.
Asked about participating in a recording session where an entourage member forced a massage, Brand replied: I was doing my best to participate.

Personal Fallout and Professional Isolation
Brand also addressed the personal impact of the allegations, which surfaced following a 2023 Channel 4 Dispatches documentary and various newspaper reports. He told the court that his friends would no longer “touch [him] with a bargepole” and described being barred by a hospital from staying with his son following the child’s open-heart surgery.
