A Vancouver lawyer faces further disciplinary action from the Law Society of BC after a recent ruling revealed additional instances of professional misconduct. Neal Burton Wang, whose legal license is currently under scrutiny, is accused of moving millions of dollars through his trust account without providing legal services to several clients.

Millions Moved Through Trust Account

A Law Society of BC review panel found Wang liable for three more counts of professional misconduct, adding to previous findings made in September 2023. These charges stem from Wang’s alleged misuse of client funds, specifically wiring $2.6 million to a Dubai-based company on behalf of a client under investigation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Between August 2017 and June 2018, Wang allegedly disbursed nearly $3.2 million from his trust account without providing substantial legal services or conducting proper inquiries and record-keeping. These actions raise serious concerns about potential money laundering.

Disciplinary Action Pending

Initially, a tribunal panel dismissed four of seven counts against Wang, prompting both the Law Society’s executive director and Wang’s counsel to seek reviews. However, the five-person review board upheld the initial findings, rejecting Wang’s appeals.

Wang’s legal career hangs in the balance as he awaits a disciplinary hearing, scheduled for a future date. The Law Society of BC has the authority to impose fines, suspensions, or, in severe cases, disbar lawyers found guilty of professional misconduct.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of ethical conduct within the legal profession. Trust in lawyers relies heavily on their adherence to professional standards and responsible handling of client funds.
