LAX Airport Fees Set to Increase for Rideshares and Taxis

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is considering a significant increase in fees for rideshare services, taxis and other commercial vehicles, potentially impacting travelers’ transportation costs. The proposed changes, set to be reviewed by the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners, could see fees more than double for some trips.

Proposed Fee Structure

Currently, riders pay access fees ranging from $4 to $5. Under the fresh proposal, a $6 base access fee would be applied to all rideshare drivers, taxis, and commercial vehicles entering LAX. Drivers utilizing the airport’s terminal curbs could face an additional $6 charge, bringing the total to $12 per pickup or drop-off. This represents a 140% increase for those using the curbside service.

Rationale Behind the Increase

Airport officials state the fee hike is necessary as the current rates haven’t been adjusted in approximately ten years, despite substantial investments in airport upgrades. The increase is too intended to manage congestion and encourage the use of the airport’s automated people mover (APM) system, which is designed to connect terminals, parking structures, a car rental facility, and the Metro rail system.

Automated People Mover Delays

The APM project, which began in 2019, has faced repeated delays. While reportedly 95% complete, the system is now expected to be operational in the second half of 2026, potentially after the FIFA World Cup in June according to the Los Angeles Business Journal. The delays are attributed to disputes between Los Angeles World Airports and LINXS, the joint venture contractor.

Industry Response

Uber has voiced strong opposition to the proposed fee increase. Danielle Lam, Uber’s head of local California policy, stated that a 140% fee hike “is indefensible” and would “punish travelers, working families, and seniors who depend on affordable, reliable transportation.” according to the LA Daily News. Uber supports improvements to LAX but argues against placing the financial burden on travelers.

Additional Proposals

The Board of Airport Commissioners is also considering a proposal to limit the number of taxi and ride-hail pickups at the curb outside the airport’s busiest terminals. Airport staff reports indicate that companies like Uber and Lyft handle nearly 30,000 trips daily into the Central Terminal Area.

Implementation Timeline

If approved, the base fee could take effect within 30 days. The higher curbside charge would be implemented once the automated people mover system becomes operational.

Rideshare Options at LAX

Travelers have several rideshare options available at LAX, including:

  • Lyft Standard: Basic service for up to four passengers. Lyft
  • Lyft XL: Accommodates up to six riders with ample luggage space. Lyft
  • Lyft Black: Premium ride service. Lyft
  • Uber: Offers various ride options, including UberX, UberXL, and Uber Black. Uber
