Remembering Captain Daniel Perez: A Hero’s Final Journey Home

On October 15, 2025, Israel mourned the loss of Captain Daniel Perez, an IDF soldier whose death during the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack was marked by a poignant return to his homeland after nearly two years in captivity. His funeral, held at Jerusalem’s Mount Herzl Military Cemetery, brought together family, friends, and fellow soldiers to honor a man whose courage and leadership left an indelible mark on those who knew him.

The Tragedy of October 7

Captain Daniel Perez, a 22-year-old tank commander from Yad Binyamin, was killed during the Hamas-led assault on Israel. According to the IDF, Perez’s tank was ambushed, and he and two crewmates, Sgt. Tomer Leibovitz and Staff Sgt. Itay Chen, were among the first casualties. While Leibovitz and Chen’s bodies were taken to Gaza by Hamas, Perez’s remains were held for over two years before being returned as part of a ceasefire agreement in 2025.

“This is the least I could do for Daniel and the whole crew,” said Matan Angrest, a fellow soldier who was held hostage but later released. “My commander will always be my commander, until the day I die.”

A Long Wait for Closure

The return of Perez’s body was part of a broader prisoner exchange agreement that also saw the release of several Israeli hostages. His remains were repatriated to Israel on October 13, 2025, two days before his funeral. The delay in recovering his body had been a source of anguish for his family and comrades, who described him as a “figure to be admired.”

“We will keep fighting for Itay Chen, until he returns,” Angrest added, referencing his fallen crewmate whose body remains in Gaza.

A Military Farewell

The funeral ceremony at Mount Herzl, Israel’s most prominent military cemetery, was attended by high-ranking IDF officials and members of the public. Perez, an immigrant from South Africa, was laid to rest alongside other fallen heroes, his legacy cemented by his service and sacrifice.

His hometown of Ra’anana also held a separate memorial for Guy Illouz, another victim whose body was returned alongside Perez’s. The dual burials underscored the human cost of the ongoing conflict and the fragile hope for peace.

Legacy and Impact

Perez’s story has become a symbol of resilience for many Israelis. His crewmates’ accounts of his leadership and camaraderie highlight the personal toll of war, while his return home offered a rare moment of closure for a nation still grappling with the aftermath of the 2023 attack.

As Israel continues to navigate the complexities of regional tensions, the memory of soldiers like Daniel Perez serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit of those who serve. His final journey home, though delayed, was a testament to the enduring bonds of duty, honor, and remembrance.
