Global LibreLocal Meetups Foster Free Software Advocacy in 2026
The Free Software Foundation (FSF) marked a significant expansion in community engagement during 2026, with 47 LibreLocal meetups held across six continents. These decentralized, in-person events brought together developers, students, and activists to discuss software freedom, share technical skills, and build local advocacy networks, according to FSF reports.
Expanding the Reach of Software Freedom

LibreLocal 2026 saw an increase in participation compared to last year, with organizers hosting gatherings in diverse venues ranging from universities and libraries to cafes and specialized technology museums. According to the FSF, 29 meetups were held last year, a number that grew to 47 this year. The United States led with 15 meetups, followed by Spain, which hosted nine events.
The meetups served as a hub for collaborative problem-solving. In Beijing, China, organizer William Goodspeed reported that attendance doubled from last year. Participants at the Beijing meetup focused on collective “hacking” sessions and conducted a key-signing party to help attendees navigate GnuPG and the Web of Trust.
Grassroots Organizing and Local Impact
Organizers often used these meetups to establish permanent local groups. In Salamanca, Spain, Rodrigo Santamaría utilized the event at the University of Salamanca to potentially set up a “group for the promotion of free software in Salamanca (FRESA).” The group plans to focus on long-term, sustainable advocacy under the strategy of “low effort, moderate impact, stability in time.”
In Neuchâtel, Switzerland, organizer Lionel Jeannerat reported an attendance of approximately 50 people. The event, which drew support from local organizations like GNU Taler and Nym, resulted in an “install party” where participants successfully liberated several machines by installing free software.
Software Advocacy in Challenging Environments
The FSF highlighted the resilience of activists working in restrictive environments. A notable LibreLocal event occurred within the Vakil Abad Prison in Mashhad, Iran. According to the FSF, the event was organized by a free software supporter currently serving a sentence for “cyber-crimes” related to the promotion of free software.
“Currently serving a sentence for ‘cyber-crimes’ related to his promotion of free software, he continues to introduce the principles of software freedom to his fellow inmates,” the FSF reported, noting that the activist’s identity remains protected for safety reasons.
How LibreLocal Supports the Community

The FSF provides logistical and financial infrastructure to help volunteers coordinate these events. Support includes:
* Monetary Grants: Available for organizers who apply through the FSF.
* Communication Channels: Using FSF platforms to connect interested attendees with local organizers.
* Infrastructure: Providing digital tools, such as the LibrePlanet website, to facilitate event planning.
The FSF is currently conducting a summer fundraiser with a goal of securing 175 new associate members by July 10, 2026. These memberships fund the programs that sustain the LibreLocal initiative.
