The Black Hole Consumption Theory
Scientists are actively working to understand the cause of this exceptional event. One prominent theory, proposed by Jonathan Granot of the Open University of Israel and colleagues, posits that a medium-sized black hole—ranging from a few hundred to 100,000 times the mass of our Sun—disrupted and consumed a star.
This process would involve the black hole tearing the star apart, forming a disk of material around it, and then gradually consuming the stellar debris. The consumption would release extreme relativistic polar jets of gamma rays, which were detected by the Fermi telescope. The repetition of gamma-ray bursts from the same location supports this theory, suggesting the black hole didn’t consume the star all at once.
Location and Implications
GRB 250702B was observed approximately 18,600 light-years from the center of its host galaxy, a region where wandering medium-sized black holes are expected to reside. If this theory is confirmed, it would represent the first direct observation of a star being consumed by a medium-sized black hole, marking a significant event in our understanding of the universe.
