Louisiana Ranks Among Top States for Doctors to Practice
Louisiana is emerging as an attractive destination for physicians, securing the third-highest ranking in a recent WalletHub study evaluating the best states to practice medicine. Montana and Indiana took the top two spots, respectively.
Factors Contributing to Louisiana’s Ranking
The WalletHub study, which analyzed 50 states and Washington, D.C., considered 19 key metrics, including physician compensation, hospital access and the quality of healthcare systems. A significant factor in Louisiana’s favorable ranking is its relatively low cost of living, making it particularly appealing to doctors burdened with student loan debt.
“If you’re able to practice in a relatively low-cost of living state like Louisiana, your annual salary will go a lot farther in a place like Ruston, Louisiana than it would be in Manhattan, New York,” explained Chip Lupo, an analyst at WalletHub.1
Projected Physician Supply and Retention
Louisiana also scored well in terms of its projected physician supply, ranking third nationally for the anticipated abundance of physicians by 2032. This suggests improved healthcare accessibility and affordability, particularly in rural areas.1
The state demonstrates a strong ability to retain physicians who complete their residencies, ranking 19th nationally in this area. Approximately 48% of residents who train in Louisiana choose to establish their practice within the state.1 Lupo noted that a retention rate around 50% is considered ideal.
Methodology
WalletHub’s analysis categorized the states based on “Opportunity & Competition” and “Medical Environment,” utilizing 19 weighted metrics scored on a 100-point scale.1
