Asus Executive Calls Apple’s MacBook Neo a ‘Shock’ to the PC Industry
Apple’s recent foray into the budget laptop market with the MacBook Neo has sent ripples through the PC industry, prompting a reaction from major players like Asus. The MacBook Neo, starting at $599, is being viewed as a significant competitive shift, particularly due to Apple’s historical positioning as a premium brand.
A Competitive Shift
S.Y. Hsu, Asus co-CEO, described the MacBook Neo’s pricing as a “shock” to the industry during a Tuesday earnings call, as reported by PCMag. Traditionally, Windows PC manufacturers haven’t faced direct competition from Apple at the lower end of the market. Hsu believes Apple’s move will necessitate a response from the entire PC ecosystem, including Microsoft, Intel, and AMD.
Industry-Wide Discussions
“In the entire PC ecosystem, there have been a lot of discussions about how to compete with this product,” Hsu stated, noting that rumors surrounding the MacBook Neo have been circulating for over a year. This suggests a widespread awareness and concern among PC manufacturers regarding the potential impact of Apple’s new offering.
Potential Limitations of the MacBook Neo
Despite the competitive threat, Hsu also pointed out potential limitations of the MacBook Neo. He highlighted the device’s 8GB of “unified memory” (RAM) and the inability for users to upgrade it. He also categorized the MacBook Neo as a “content consumption” device, drawing parallels to the iPad, suggesting it may not fully cater to users requiring more compute-intensive capabilities found in mainstream notebooks.
Positive Reception Despite Concerns
Despite Hsu’s assessment, the MacBook Neo has received positive reviews. PCMag awarded the laptop an “outstanding” score, praising its speed for basic computing tasks and its capability for light gaming.
Early Demand and Shipping Delays
Preorders for the MacBook Neo began last week, with an initial launch date of March 11th. However, shipping times have already extended to a few weeks, indicating strong initial demand. Apple is offering the MacBook Neo in Silver, Blush, Citrus, and Indigo.
Future Outlook
Hsu acknowledged that the full impact of the MacBook Neo on the PC industry remains to be seen, suggesting it may not gain significant traction among Windows PC users due to software differences. However, he affirmed that the Windows PC ecosystem will undoubtedly introduce competing products to challenge Apple’s new offering.
