The ruling BJP in Maharashtra faces a major challenge as key leaders, seemingly dissatisfied with ticket distribution, have decided to contest independently in the upcoming assembly elections. This wave of rebellion casts a shadow on the BJP-Shinde Mahayuti, especially in crucial constituencies like Borivali, Mumbadevi, and Akola West, where influential figures are now charting their own course.
High-Profile Defections
Gopal Shetty, a prominent Mumbai BJP leader who aimed for the Borivali seat, has expressed his disappointment after the party chose Sanjay Upadhyay as the candidate. Shetty has firmly announced his independent candidacy. Despite attempts by senior leader Ashish Shelar to mend fences, Shetty remains resolute in his decision.
In another unexpected move, Shaina NC, a veteran BJP leader, was nominated by the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) for the Mumbadevi seat, despite previously seeking the Worli constituency under the BJP banner. This sudden shift led to surprise across the political landscape. Shaina has since joined the Shiv Sena (Shinde) faction and will now face Congress candidate Amin Patel, creating a highly contested race. Adding to the complexity, BJP’s Atul Shah, dissatisfied with Shaina’s selection, intends to run as an independent, potentially splitting the Mahayuti votes in Mumbadevi.
Adding Fuel to the Fire
In Bandra East, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has nominated Zeeshan Siddiqui, further complicating matters for the alliance. Kunal Sarmalkar, a Shiv Sena (Shinde) faction leader, has announced his independent candidacy for the constituency, expressing discontent with the ticket allocation.
In Akola West, senior leader Harish Alimchandani, with 28 years of experience in local politics, has declared his independent candidacy after the BJP chose Vijay Agarwal, a former mayor. The perceived disregard for Alimchandani’s experience has fueled his decision to protest.
A Growing Crisis for the BJP
The assembly elections in Maharashtra are set to be a closely fought contest, and the BJP’s internal dissent adds another layer of complexity. The defections of these senior leaders pose a significant challenge to the Mahayuti’s unity and could potentially benefit the opposition parties. The BJP leadership is working tirelessly to contain the fallout and convince these disgruntled leaders to retract their independent bids. However, with the clock ticking, the party’s internal struggles threaten to impact their electoral prospects in the crucial Maharashtra assembly polls.
