Malema Accuses KZN Police Commissioner of Attempting to Draw EFF into Internal Disputes
Johannesburg, South Africa – Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has publicly criticized KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, accusing him of attempting to involve the EFF in internal disputes within the South African Police Service (SAPS). The criticism follows allegations raised at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry linking Malema to the alleged manipulation of a Tshwane Municipality security tender in 2024, claims he vehemently denies.
Dispute with Feroz Khan at the Center of Accusations
Speaking at the EFF’s National Voter Registration Launch in Johannesburg on Saturday, Malema asserted that Mkhwanazi was inappropriately attempting to connect him to a conflict with Police Crime Counter-Intelligence head, General Feroz Khan. “We are not fanatics of Mkhwanazi… We stand with the truth, and if you blunder, we’ll tell you this is not right,” Malema stated, according to IOL. He further emphasized that the EFF is not aligned with Mkhwanazi and would not hesitate to criticize him if necessary.
Denial of Corruption Allegations
Malema reiterated his denial of any corrupt relationship with Khan or any involvement in police tenders. “I realize Sibiya for nothing. I’ve got no corrupt relationship with General Khan or anyone of that sort. I’ve got no tender in the police or anywhere. That’s why they will never find me,” he said, as reported by SABC News. He dismissed the allegations as attempts to discredit him and the EFF.
Madlanga Commission and Previous Parliamentary Scrutiny
The current dispute builds on previous scrutiny stemming from the Madlanga Commission. In October 2025, Malema criticized the use of Mkhwanazi’s statement to the Madlanga Commission during a parliamentary ad hoc committee probing allegations of political interference in the criminal justice system, arguing that the committee needed a statement directly addressed to them, as Sowetan reported at the time.
EFF’s Stance on Law Enforcement
Malema concluded by asserting the EFF’s lack of fear towards law enforcement officials, referencing the party’s historical stance against police intimidation. “We are not scared of policemen,” he declared, adding that this principle has been consistent throughout the party’s history.
